Day Two - subway, financial district, ground zero

On the second day we took the subway to go south to the financial district.
Financial district "Gastgarten". Not as idyllic as those places tend to be where I'm from

This is the same street, looking up from the "Gastgarten".

More high rises

Church and art

Old cemetary in the middle of financial district. Stark contrast to its surroundings.

Subway entrance

On broadway. It seemed like we were on broadway all the time because it goes diagonally through Manhattan and that's why you find yourself on it a lot.

When we walked around southern Manhattan on our first day, I thought a lot about 9/11 and began to understand a little bit better what must have been going on that day. Well, luckily I really can't imagine how crazy it must have been but I got an idea. A catastrophy like that happening in this place must be as scary as it gets. We went to ground zero and I didn't know what to think. I still don't know what to say, so here are the pictures.

The Freedom Tower is going to be where the towers used to be. Its estimated completion is in 2010. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_Tower

The towers used to be in front of these two buildings and they were a lot taller.

From the other side. Looking down on ground zero. After 5 years it is still a construction site and so far, the Freedom Tower can only be seen on pictures.
